Understanding CLE Requirements for Ohio Attorneys

As we approach the end of the year, it’s important for Ohio attorneys to confirm whether they’re due to complete their Continuing Legal Education (CLE) requirements. Ohio’s CLE reporting system operates on a biennial cycle, with attorneys divided into two groups based on the last name listed with the Supreme Court of Ohio. Here’s a quick guide to help you determine if this is your reporting year and what you need to do to stay compliant.

Who Must Report This Year?

Ohio attorneys are split into two reporting groups under Supreme Court Rules for the Government of the Bar of Ohio Rule X section 4:

  • Last Names M-Z: These attorneys must have the required CLE by December 31 in even numbered years. (e.g., 2024, 2026).
  • Last Names A-L: These attorneys must have the required CLE by December 31 in odd numbered years (e.g., 2023, 2025).

For 2024, attorneys with last names starting with M through Z must ensure they’ve met their CLE requirements by the December 31, 2024, deadline.

How to Check Your CLE Status

  • Login to the Attorney Services Portal: The Ohio Supreme Court provides an online portal where attorneys can track CLE credits and verify their compliance status.
  • Confirm Compliance Period: Check whether your last name (A-L) places you in the 2024 reporting group and ensure all your CLE credits are properly reported.

Penalties for Noncompliance

Failing to meet CLE requirements on time can result in fines and, potentially, a suspension from practicing law under Rule X Section 17. Avoid these penalties by planning ahead and ensuring your credits are completed before the December 31 deadline.
